Feral bobcats, Lynx rufus, inhabit most of North America, from as far south as the Florida Everglades and northern Mexico north into Canada. The bobcat is somewhat larger than domestic cat breeds. It is a powerful animal with long legs and a muscular body and is noted for its short tail with a white tip.
The bobcat may weigh from fifteen to thirty pounds, with the smaller animals living generally in the southern ranges and the larger variants to the north. A mature bobcat has the characteristic tufting on the cheeks and tipping on the ears.
The coat may vary from a reddish brown color to a decidedly gray color, with heavy ticking and spotting on the coat.
These cats are generally nocturnal and solitary by nature. A male is seldom seen with a female except at the time of mating.
